CHOOSING THE RIGHT LAWN
Not All Lawns Are the Same: Choosing the Right
Natural Turf for Your Space

The best lawn depends on what you need it to do
When people imagine their ideal lawn, they often picture one thing: thick, green grass. In reality, lawns are
used in very different ways. A family garden has different demands from a sports field, a landscaped
entrance, a school playground or a quieter decorative area.
The key to a successful natural lawn is not simply buying grass. It is understanding the site and choosing
turf suited to the conditions and purpose.
The family lawn
A family lawn needs to be practical as well as attractive. Children, pets, garden furniture, weekend
entertaining and regular foot traffic can all place pressure on the grass.
For these spaces, consider how much sunlight the area receives and how intensively the lawn will be used.
A variety suited to the site’s light and wear conditions will generally be easier to manage than trying to
force the wrong grass into the wrong environment.
The high-traffic lawn
Schools, communal spaces and frequently used gardens need turf that can cope with regular activity. Wear
tolerance and recovery become important considerations, along with good soil preparation and ongoing
maintenance.
Even robust natural turf needs care. Heavy traffic can compact soil and place stress on grass, so the
management of the area remains important after the turf has established.
The sports surface
Sports fields are a specialised example of how purpose influences turf choice. The surface must support
movement, withstand repeated use and be maintained to an appropriate standard for the sport and level of
play.
Grass selection is only one part of the equation. Soil profile, drainage, mowing, irrigation, feeding and
usage patterns all affect performance. For larger or specialised sporting applications, professional turf and
agronomic advice is especially valuable.
The sunny lawn
A garden receiving strong, direct sunlight may offer excellent growing conditions for sun-loving turf
varieties. However, more sun can also mean faster moisture loss during hot weather.
The correct grass choice, combined with sensible watering and mowing, can help create a strong summer
lawn without treating every garden exactly the same.

Shade can be one of the biggest challenges in lawn care. Buildings, boundary walls and trees can reduce
the amount of direct sunlight reaching the grass. Some turf types cope with lower light better than others,
but no lawn can thrive without adequate growing conditions.
Before choosing turf, look at how the sunlight moves across the property during the day. An area that
appears sunny at midday may spend much of the morning or afternoon in shade.
The showcase lawn
For some properties, appearance is the priority. Entrance areas, landscaped gardens, corporate spaces
and feature lawns may be selected for their texture, colour and overall visual finish.
Even here, beauty should not be separated from practicality. The most attractive lawn will still be the one
suited to the site’s sunlight, soil, water availability and maintenance plan.
Ask the right questions before you buy
Before choosing a natural turf, consider four simple questions: How much direct sun does the area
receive? How much foot traffic will it carry? What is the soil and drainage like? How will the lawn be
maintained?
Those answers make it much easier to narrow down the right turf option. Instead of choosing grass only
from a photograph, choose it for the life it will actually live.
Your lawn should fit your lifestyle
There is no single perfect lawn for every property. The right lawn is the one that matches the environment,
intended use and level of care available.
