Which One Belongs in Your Garden?

Prepared for Evergreen Turf

________________________________________

Article

When it comes to choosing the perfect lawn, many homeowners find themselves asking the same question: real grass or artificial grass? At first glance, artificial grass may seem like the easier option. It looks neat, needs less maintenance, and stays green throughout the year. But when you look a little deeper, real grass offers something artificial grass simply cannot replace: life.

A real lawn is more than just a green surface. It is a living part of your home. It cools the environment, softens outdoor spaces, supports natural beauty, and creates a place where families can relax, play, and connect. There is something different about stepping barefoot onto real grass. It feels fresh, natural, and alive.

Artificial grass, on the other hand, is a manufactured surface. While it may offer convenience, it does not grow, breathe, or contribute to the natural ecosystem around your home. In hotter weather, artificial grass can also become uncomfortable underfoot because synthetic surfaces tend to absorb and hold heat. For families with children or pets, that is an important factor to consider.

Real grass also brings a sense of freshness to your outdoor space. It helps create a cooler, more welcoming garden and adds natural texture that changes beautifully with the seasons. With the right lawn choice and proper preparation, real grass can be durable, attractive, and practical for everyday living.

Another key difference is the emotional value. A real lawn is where childhood memories are made. It is where kids run, pets play, families gather, and quiet moments happen. It turns a yard into a living space. Artificial grass may look green, but real grass gives your home atmosphere, comfort, and connection.

Of course, every lawn needs care. Real grass requires watering, mowing, and seasonal maintenance. But that care also comes with reward. A healthy lawn improves the look and feel of your property and gives you a natural outdoor space you can truly enjoy.

At Evergreen Turf, we believe a lawn should do more than look good in a photo. It should feel good, live well, and bring value to your home. As one of the largest instant lawn suppliers, Evergreen Turf helps homeowners, landscapers, and developers choose the right natural grass for their spaces.

So, when choosing between real and artificial grass, ask yourself: do you want something that only looks alive, or something that truly is?

Choose real. Choose natural. Choose Evergreen Turf.

Evergreen Turf | Real Grass. Real Life.

As the chill of winter settles in across Gauteng and beyond, many homeowners look out at their gardens and start to panic: “Why is my grass turning brown?”

The answer might surprise you — your lawn isn’t dead… it’s just taking a nap.

At Evergreen Turf, we often get asked if winter is a bad time for lawns. The truth? Winter can be one of the best times to buy and prepare your turf. Let us explain why.

Understanding Dormancy: Your Lawn Isn’t Dying

During winter, especially in cooler regions, Kikuyu grass enters a dormant phase. This is nature’s way of protecting the grass during colder months. The green fades to a duller, sometimes brownish tone — but beneath the surface, the roots are still alive and well.

Dormancy is not death. It’s a natural cycle.

So before you panic or start digging up your lawn, know this: your grass is simply resting and preparing for spring.

Why Buy Turf in Winter?

Many people believe that grass only grows or gets installed in summer. But that’s not the full picture. In fact, there are some key advantages to buying turf during the colder months:

Fewer weeds: Weed activity slows down significantly in winter, giving your new turf less competition as it establishes.

Better root establishment: The cooler temperatures reduce stress on the grass, allowing the roots to settle in more easily.

Less maintenance: You won’t need to mow often, and watering needs are lower than in summer.

Preparation for spring: Lay turf now, and by the time warmer weather rolls in, your lawn will be ready to spring back to life — literally.

Evergreen Turf Is Prepped for Winter

Our team has been working hard behind the scenes to prep for winter demand. Whether it’s harvesting fresh Kikuyu or ensuring our yards are fully stocked, we’re ready to serve both landscapers and walk-in customers.

Recently, reports have emerged of African armyworm infestations affecting farms across South Africa, causing concern for farmers, landscapers, and homeowners alike. This pest outbreak has been detected in multiple provinces, leading to fears about potential damage to crops and turf. However, at Evergreen Turf, we want to assure our valued customers that our premium grass varieties remain armyworm-free and continue to thrive.

What Is the African Armyworm?

The African armyworm (Spodoptera exempta) is a migratory pest that primarily targets crops, pastures, and certain grass species. These larvae, in their feeding stage, can cause severe defoliation in a short period, making them a serious threat to agricultural and turf landscapes. Favourable weather conditions, such as high humidity and recent rainfall, often contribute to outbreaks.

Why Evergreen Turf’s Grass Remains Safe

While the African armyworm has been detected in some areas, Evergreen Turf’s carefully cultivated grasses have not been affected. Here’s why:

Regular Monitoring & Maintenance: Our farms implement rigorous pest management strategies, ensuring early detection and prevention of infestations.

Resilient Grass Varieties: We supply high-quality, well-maintained grass cultivars that are robust and naturally resilient to common pests.

Strategic Turf Care: Our turf management practices include optimal fertilization, irrigation, and biological control measures that keep pests at bay.

Insecticide Treatment Strategies (Credit: Grasses and Green)

Curative Treatments: Numerous organophosphate, carbamate, pyrethroid, and diacylhydrazine insecticides effectively control armyworms in turf. On golf course greens and tees, it is recommended that spraying a band of turf surrounding the affected area (a minimum of one boom or spreader width) will help keep larvae from moving back onto the greens from surrounding turf.

Preventive Treatments: Field tests with neonicotinoid insecticides (usually long residual systemic insecticides) have shown that some applied to golf course greens or tees provided suppression of armyworms for about 30 days. Other systemic insecticides may have effective residual effects of 14 to over 90 days.

How to Protect Your Lawn from Armyworms

While Evergreen Turf’s products remain unaffected, we encourage homeowners and businesses to stay proactive in their lawn care. Here are some preventive tips:

Monitor for Signs of Infestation: Keep an eye out for rapid yellowing, bare patches, or visible caterpillars feeding on your grass.

Water and Fertilize Correctly: A healthy lawn is more resistant to pests, so ensure your turf receives adequate nutrients and hydration.

Introduce Beneficial Insects: Natural predators, such as birds and parasitic wasps, help control armyworm populations.

Use Safe Pest Control Methods: If an infestation occurs in surrounding areas, consider eco-friendly biological insecticides to protect your lawn.

Trust Evergreen Turf for Premium, Healthy Grass

Our commitment to quality ensures that our customers receive only the best turf solutions, free from pest infestations. We continue to monitor the situation closely and remain dedicated to providing healthy, lush, and vibrant lawns for homes, businesses, and sports fields.

The True Cost of Artificial Turf vs. Real Grass.

When choosing between artificial turf and real grass, many South Africans are drawn to synthetic options due to their reputation for being “low-maintenance” and “cost-effective.” However, the reality often tells a different story. Over time, artificial grass can become a financial burden due to hidden costs related to maintenance, repairs, and eventual replacement. On the other hand, real grass offers an affordable, sustainable, and beautiful solution for lawns and sports fields alike.

1. The Initial Investment

The upfront cost of installing artificial turf is significantly higher than that of real grass. Artificial turf installation typically involves:

Preparation Costs: Ground leveling, drainage systems, and base material installation.

Synthetic Turf Costs: High-quality artificial grass can cost thousands of rands per square meter.

Professional Installation Fees: Due to the complexity of laying synthetic grass, professional services are almost always required.

In contrast, planting real grass is much more cost-effective. With options like Kikuyu or Tifsport, you can cover a large area for a fraction of the cost of artificial turf. Even when accounting for the cost of soil preparation, seeds, or sod, real grass remains the more affordable option.

2. Maintenance Costs

Artificial turf is often marketed as a “maintenance-free” solution, but this is misleading. Synthetic grass requires regular upkeep to remain functional and visually appealing. Key maintenance costs include:

Specialized Equipment: Tools like sweepers, groomers, and field magnets are essential for keeping artificial turf clean and evenly distributed.

Cleaning and Repairs: Artificial turf needs regular cleaning to remove dirt, debris, and bacteria. After heavy rains, water pooling and mold growth can become significant issues, requiring additional treatments and repairs.

Replacement Costs: Artificial turf has a lifespan of 8–10 years, after which it must be replaced entirely. Each replacement essentially resets your initial investment, making it a recurring expense.

Real grass, on the other hand, requires standard maintenance such as mowing, fertilizing, and watering. These activities are manageable and cost-effective, especially in Gauteng, where seasonal rains can reduce irrigation needs.

3. Longevity and Value

One of the most significant advantages of real grass is its potential for longevity. With proper care, a natural lawn can thrive indefinitely, requiring no replacement. In contrast, the lifespan of artificial turf is limited, and replacement costs are unavoidable.

Real grass also enhances the value of your property by improving curb appeal and providing a natural, vibrant outdoor space. Artificial turf, while neat and uniform in appearance, lacks the organic beauty of a living lawn.

4. A Better Investment for South Africans

For homeowners, schools, and sports facilities in South Africa, real grass represents a more sustainable and cost-effective choice. With the right care, it provides unmatched value, both financially and aesthetically.

Article 1: The True Cost of Artificial Turf vs. Real Grass

When deciding between artificial turf and real grass, many are initially swayed by the marketing of synthetic options as “low-maintenance” and “cost-effective.” However, a detailed look at the long-term costs reveals that artificial turf often comes with hidden expenses that outweigh its initial appeal. Real grass, on the other hand, offers lasting value, affordability, and natural beauty, making it the better choice for South African homeowners, schools, and sports facilities.

The Initial Installation Costs

Artificial turf comes with significant upfront costs. Installing synthetic grass involves preparing the ground, installing a drainage system, and laying the turf itself. For large areas such as sports fields, this process can cost upwards of R1 million. Beyond the materials, specialized tools and professional installation services further drive up the initial investment.

By contrast, real grass is far more cost-effective to install. Whether you choose to plant grass seeds or lay sod, the process is straightforward and much cheaper. For South Africans in areas like Gauteng, where grass grows quickly and easily with the right care, the installation of real grass is an accessible and practical solution.

Ongoing Maintenance Costs

While artificial turf is often marketed as “maintenance-free,” this is far from the truth. Synthetic grass requires ongoing upkeep to retain its appearance and usability:

Cleaning and Grooming: Dirt, debris, and bacteria can accumulate on artificial turf, particularly after heavy rains. Regular cleaning is essential to maintain hygiene, which may involve water and specialized cleaning products.

Specialized Equipment: Maintaining synthetic grass requires tools such as sweepers, groomers, and field magnets, all of which can be costly to purchase and maintain.

Chemical Treatments: To prevent mold and bacteria growth, artificial turf must be treated with chemicals, which can be harmful to the environment and require frequent application.

Replacement Costs: Artificial turf typically has a lifespan of 8–10 years. After this period, the entire surface needs to be replaced, incurring significant costs once again.

Real grass, by contrast, requires regular but manageable care. Mowing, fertilizing, and watering are simple tasks that can be done with standard gardening tools. In South Africa, where seasonal rains often support natural growth, the cost of maintaining a real lawn is minimal compared to the ongoing expenses associated with synthetic turf.

Longevity and Durability

The longevity of artificial turf is limited, and replacement is inevitable. Each replacement resets the financial investment, making synthetic turf a recurring expense over the long term. Additionally, wear and tear from heavy use can degrade the surface, leading to uneven patches and costly repairs.

Real grass, on the other hand, can last indefinitely with proper care. By aerating the soil, applying fertilizer, and addressing weeds, a natural lawn can thrive for decades. Real grass not only offers durability but also enhances the property’s aesthetic and market value.

Environmental Considerations

Real grass supports the environment in multiple ways. It absorbs carbon dioxide, releases oxygen, filters rainwater, and prevents soil erosion. Artificial turf, however, contributes to environmental degradation. Made from non-biodegradable plastics and rubber, synthetic grass adds to the global problem of plastic waste. Furthermore, its manufacturing process emits significant carbon dioxide, exacerbating climate change.

Real Grass: A Better Long-Term Investment

For South Africans, the decision between artificial turf and real grass should consider both financial and environmental factors. Real grass provides unmatched value, both in cost and quality. Its natural beauty, sustainability, and affordability make it the clear choice for homeowners and organizations alike.

While artificial grass may seem convenient, real grass offers unmatched beauty, environmental benefits, and long-term value. It enhances your home’s curb appeal, provides a safe and natural surface for outdoor activities, and contributes to a healthier environment.

Below are four major tips to ensure your lawn remains healthy, green, and thriving.1. Aerate Your Lawn to Prevent Soil CompactionHeavy rains can compact the soil, reducing airflow and hindering root growth. Aerating your lawn improves drainage and allows water, oxygen, and nutrients to penetrate the soil effectively.
How to Aerate:
Use a garden fork for smaller areas or a mechanical aerator for larger lawns.Focus on high-traffic areas where compaction is most severe.
Frequency: Aerate once in January if your lawn feels spongy or shows signs of water pooling.Benefits: Aeration reduces waterlogging, promotes deep root growth, and prepares the soil for fertilizers.
2. Address Weed Growth PromptlyThe rains often encourage rapid weed growth, which competes with your grass for nutrients and water. January is the perfect time to tackle weeds before they go to seed.
What to Do:
Hand-pull larger weeds like dandelions and thistles to remove their roots.Apply a selective herbicide for smaller weeds, ensuring it’s suitable for your grass type (e.g., Kikuyu, Bermuda, or LM grass).Mulch clippings from weed-free areas to suppress further weed germination.
Precaution: Avoid using herbicides during the hottest parts of the day to prevent burning the lawn.
3. Fertilize Smartly for Sustained GrowthAfter heavy rains, essential nutrients in the soil may have been leached away. A mid-summer application of fertilizer replenishes lost nutrients and encourages healthy growth.
Which Fertilizer to Use:
Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer (e.g., 3:1:5 or 5:1:5) to promote leaf and root growth.Organic options like composted chicken manure or seaweed solutions are excellent for natural nutrient boosts.
How to Apply:
Fertilize early in the morning or late afternoon to minimize evaporation.Water the lawn lightly after application to help the nutrients seep into the soil.
Frequency: Fertilize once in January to give your lawn a boost through the rest of the growing season.
4. Monitor and Manage Pests and DiseasesWarm, wet conditions create an ideal environment for lawn pests and diseases such as armyworms, fungal infections, or brown patches.
How to Spot Issues:
Look for irregular yellow or brown patches, which may indicate fungal problems.Check for signs of pests, such as holes in the grass or visible larvae.
Preventive Measures:
Improve drainage to reduce standing water, which promotes fungal growth.Use a fungicide or pesticide specifically designed for your grass cultivar if pests or diseases are present.
Natural Solutions: Neem oil and garlic sprays can be effective against pests without harming beneficial insects.
Final ThoughtsCaring for your lawn in January after a season of heavy rains requires a balance of replenishing nutrients, improving soil health, and addressing potential challenges like weeds and pests. By aerating your lawn, managing weeds, fertilizing wisely, and monitoring for pests and diseases, you can ensure a lush, green lawn that stays beautiful throughout the summer.Remember, regular care and vigilance are key to keeping your turf in optimal condition. If you’re unsure about any step, consulting a local lawn care professional or garden center can provide valuable insights specific to your turf type and region.

Real vs. Artificial Grass: Why Real Grass is the Better Choice for Your Lawn

In the wake of Gauteng’s recent rains, many homeowners are weighing the benefits of real grass versus artificial turf. While artificial grass has its advantages, real grass stands out as the superior choice for those who value natural beauty, environmental benefits, and long-term satisfaction. Let’s dive into four key factors that highlight why real grass is worth the investment.

1. Natural Aesthetic and Environmental Benefits

Real Grass:

Authentic Beauty: Nothing beats the vibrant look and feel of natural grass. It’s soft underfoot, releases a refreshing aroma after rain, and enhances the overall aesthetic of your property.

Environmental Contributions: Real grass absorbs carbon dioxide and releases oxygen, significantly improving air quality. It also acts as a natural water filter, reducing runoff and improving groundwater recharge.

Supports Biodiversity: Real lawns provide a habitat for insects, birds, and other small animals, contributing to a healthier local ecosystem.

Artificial Grass:

Synthetic Appearance: While artificial grass may look neat, it lacks the authentic feel and cooling effect of natural grass, often appearing plastic-like up close.

Environmental Drawbacks: Made from non-biodegradable materials, artificial grass contributes to environmental waste and offers no benefits to local ecosystems.

2. Comfort and Safety

Real Grass:

Temperature Regulation: Real grass stays cool even on hot summer days, making it a comfortable surface for children, pets, and outdoor activities.

Safe and Non-Toxic: Natural grass doesn’t release harmful chemicals, making it safe for your family and the environment.

Rain Adaptability: After heavy rains, real grass absorbs water, preventing puddles and maintaining a safe playing surface when well-drained.

Artificial Grass:

Heat Retention: Artificial turf can become extremely hot under direct sunlight, making it uncomfortable and potentially unsafe to walk on.

Chemical Exposure: Many artificial grass products contain synthetic chemicals that may pose health concerns over time.

3. Maintenance and Long-Term Value

Real Grass:

Dynamic Growth: With proper care, your lawn can regenerate and thrive year after year. Seasonal rains help to replenish the soil, reducing the need for excessive watering.

Sustainable Investment: While real grass requires regular mowing, aeration, and fertilization, these practices improve soil health and add long-term value to your home.

Better Drainage: Real grass, when paired with proper soil and care, offers superior drainage compared to artificial turf, which can accumulate water if drainage layers clog.

Artificial Grass:

Static Nature: Artificial turf doesn’t grow or adapt to its environment. Over time, it can become worn or faded, requiring replacement.

Upkeep Required: While advertised as low-maintenance, artificial grass still requires cleaning to remove debris, as well as occasional repairs.

4. Cost Considerations: A Worthwhile Investment

Real Grass:

Affordable Installation: Real grass is more cost-effective to install compared to artificial options.

Ongoing Value: While regular maintenance incurs costs, it’s an investment in a living, breathing feature that enhances your property’s natural appeal.

Community Impact: By planting real grass, you contribute to a greener, more sustainable environment, aligning with local water management goals.

Artificial Grass:

High Initial Cost: Artificial turf installation is expensive and requires professional expertise for optimal results.

Replacement Expenses: Over time, artificial grass may need to be replaced, adding to its overall cost.

Why Choose Real Grass?

While artificial grass may seem convenient, real grass offers unmatched beauty, environmental benefits, and long-term value. It enhances your home’s curb appeal, provides a safe and natural surface for outdoor activities, and contributes to a healthier environment.

style="font-family: Helvetica;">The heavy rains that Gauteng experienced recently have left lawns lush but also vulnerable to challenges like overwatering, soil compaction, and pests. January is an important time for lawn care as we prepare for the late summer months.
If you’re unsure about any step, consulting a local lawn care professional or garden center can provide valuable insights specific to your turf type and region.

style="font-family: Helvetica;">The heavy rains that Gauteng experienced recently have left lawns lush but also vulnerable to challenges like overwatering, soil compaction, and pests. January is an important time for lawn care as we prepare for the late summer months.

A well-maintained lawn is the epitome of natural beauty, adding a touch of tranquillity and charm to any landscape. Among the various types of lawn grasses, Kikuyu (Pennisetum clandestinum) is a popular choice for its rapid growth, resilience, and vibrant green colour. Kikuyu instant lawn, in particular, has gained immense popularity among homeowners, landscapers, and garden enthusiasts seeking a lush and robust lawn in the shortest time possible. This comprehensive guide will explore everything you need to know about Kikuyu instant lawn, from its origins and characteristics to the advantages, care tips, and potential considerations.

A brief overview of Kikuyu grass

Kikuyu grass is a warm-season perennial grass named after the Kikuyu people, an ethnic group in Kenya, who used the grass for traditional thatching purposes. Due to its adaptability, Kikuyu grass was later introduced to other parts of the world, including Australia, South Africa, and some regions of California.

Characteristics of Kikuyu instant lawn

Kikuyu instant lawn exhibits several distinctive characteristics that make it a desirable lawn choice.

· Rapid growth: One of the key advantages of Kikuyu instant lawns is its exceptional growth rate. When properly cared for, it can establish a lush green lawn in a relatively short period compared to many other grass varieties.

· Drought tolerance: Kikuyu grass is renowned for its ability to withstand drought. Its deep root system enables it to access water stored in lower soil layers during dry spells, making it an ideal choice for regions with limited water availability.

· Highly resilient: This grass type can recover from wear and tear, making it ideal for areas with heavy foot traffic, such as playgrounds or sports fields.

· Vibrant green colour: The lush, bright green colour of Kikuyu instant lawn adds a refreshing and vibrant touch to any landscape, enhancing the overall aesthetics of the surrounding area.

Advantages of Kikuyu instant lawn

Choosing Kikuyu instant lawn offers numerous advantages, making it an appealing option for homeowners and landscapers.

· Cost-effective: As Kikuyu grass grows rapidly, establishing a full and dense lawn requires less time and effort. This makes it a cost-effective option compared to slower-growing grass varieties that may necessitate more maintenance and resources.

· Low maintenance: Once established, Kikuyu instant lawn requires minimal maintenance. Regular mowing, watering, and occasional fertilisation are sufficient to keep it in top condition.

· Versatility: Kikuyu grass thrives in various soil types, including sandy and clay soils, making it versatile and suitable for various environments.

· Erosion Control: Kikuyu grass’s dense growth and deep root system help prevent soil erosion, making it an excellent choice for areas susceptible to erosion.

Kikuyu instant lawn care tips

Following some care tips is essential to ensure your Kikuyu instant lawn remains healthy and vibrant.

· Watering: While Kikuyu grass is drought-tolerant, it requires adequate water to establish a strong root system. Water deeply but infrequently, encouraging the roots to grow deeper into the soil.

· Mowing: Regular mowing is necessary to keep the lawn neat and prevent thatch buildup. For best results, maintain a mowing height of around six to eight centimetres.

· Fertilisation: Kikuyu grass benefits from occasional fertilisation to maintain its lush green colour and health. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to apply a balanced fertiliser during the active growing season.

· Weed control: Kikuyu grass has a strong growth habit that can help it outcompete some weeds. However, regular inspection and spot treatment of weeds may be necessary to maintain a weed-free lawn.

· Aeration: Periodic aeration helps alleviate soil compaction and ensures optimal nutrient and water absorption, promoting healthier grass growth.

Considerations for Kikuyu instant lawn

While Kikuyu instant lawn offers numerous advantages, it’s essential to consider some factors before choosing it for your lawn.

· Invasive nature: Kikuyu grass is known to be invasive and spread to areas where it’s not wanted. Consider installing physical barriers or maintaining clear borders around the lawn to prevent this.

· Cold sensitivity: While Kikuyu grass is well-suited for warm climates, it can struggle during cold winters. In regions with frost or freezing temperatures, Kikuyu may experience dormancy and turn brown until warmer weather returns.

· Allergies: Some people may be sensitive to Kikuyu grass pollen, which could cause allergic reactions. You must be aware of this potential concern if you or your family members have allergies.

Tiffsport® Golf Course Grass Maintenance For winter

Maintaining a pristine golf course during the winter season is crucial for golfers’ enjoyment and the overall health of the turf. Tiffsport®, a popular warm-season turfgrass, requires specific care during the colder months to ensure it remains in optimal condition. To ensure that your golf course maintains its optimal condition throughout the winter, it is essential to implement a comprehensive maintenance plan. This article will provide a step-by-step guide on Tiffsport® golf course grass maintenance for winter, covering essential tasks and techniques to keep your course in top shape.

Winter Preparation

· Evaluate the turf condition: Before the onset of winter, conduct a thorough assessment of the Tiffsport® golf course grass to identify any existing issues or potential problems. Check for diseases, insect damage, drainage issues, and compaction.

· Perform necessary repairs: Address any identified issues, such as damaged areas, irrigation problems, or drainage deficiencies. Repair damaged turf, fix irrigation systems, and improve drainage if required.

· Aerate the turf: Core aeration helps alleviate soil compaction and facilitates proper water and air movement. Conduct deep core aeration to improve soil health and prepare the turf for winter.

· Fertilise appropriately: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser to promote root growth and overall turf health. Consult a turf specialist to determine the correct fertiliser blend and timing for your specific climate and Tiffsport® golf course grass requirements.

Mowing And Height Adjustments

· Gradually raise mowing height: As winter approaches, gradually increase the mowing height to provide better turf protection against low temperatures and potential frost damage. Adjust the height according to the grass growth rate and climate conditions.

· Maintain consistent mowing frequency: Continue regular mowing until grass growth slows down. Aim to keep the grass at an optimal height for winter conditions, ensuring it remains healthy and disease-resistant.

Irrigation And Water Management

· Monitor soil moisture levels: Adjust irrigation schedules to account for reduced water requirements during the winter. Monitor soil moisture levels regularly and apply water only when necessary, considering rainfall and other environmental factors.

· Protect against winter desiccation: In areas with freezing temperatures and dry winds, consider applying an anti-desiccant product to protect the Tiffsport® golf course grass from winter dehydration. This helps reduce moisture loss and keeps the turf healthier during the dormant period.

Weed And Pest Control

· Weed management: Implement a weed control program during the winter to prevent weed growth and competition with the Tiffsport® golf course grass. Apply pre-emergent herbicides in late fall or early winter to prevent weed seeds from germinating.

· Pest monitoring and treatment: Regularly inspect the turf for signs of pests and disease activity. Treat any infestations promptly using appropriate insecticides, fungicides, or nematicides recommended for Tiffsport® golf course grass and your specific pest issues.

Contact Evergreen Turf For Details

Maintaining a Tiffsport® golf course grass during winter requires careful planning and execution of various maintenance practices. By following the steps outlined in this comprehensive guide, golf course managers and superintendents can ensure the health and vitality of the Tiffsport® turf, leading to a successful transition from winter dormancy to vibrant spring growth. Contact us today to order your Tiffsport® golf course grass.

Winter Care Tips For LM Instant Lawn

Maintaining a healthy and vibrant lawn requires regular care and attention, especially during winter. LM instant lawn is known for its lush and beautiful appearance. However, it is essential to implement proper winter care practices to ensure the longevity and resilience of your LM instant lawn. This article will provide comprehensive guidelines to help you effectively care for your LM instant lawn during the winter season.

Rake And Remove Debris

Before winter sets in, it is crucial to thoroughly rake your LM instant lawn to remove fallen leaves, twigs, and other debris. Accumulated debris can block sunlight, hinder airflow, and create a breeding ground for diseases and pests. Clearing the lawn ensures that the grass receives adequate sunlight and reduces the risk of disease and decay.

Aerate The Soil

Aerating the soil before winter is beneficial for the overall health of your LM instant lawn. Aerating involves perforating the soil with small holes to improve water and nutrient penetration. This process helps prevent soil compaction and enhances root growth, enabling the grass to withstand the harsh winter conditions better.

Continue Mowing

Don’t neglect to mow your LM instant lawn as winter approaches. Gradually reduce the mowing height, keeping it around five or six centimetres. Trimming the grass helps prevent matting, disease, and pest infestation. However, avoid cutting the grass too short, as it can weaken the lawn’s ability to withstand the winter cold and dryness.

Fertilise

Apply a slow-release, winter-specific fertiliser to your LM instant lawn before winter arrives. This will provide essential nutrients to the grass, promoting root development and improving overall resilience. Choose a fertiliser with higher phosphorus and potassium levels to fortify the grass against winter stress. Follow the instructions on the fertiliser packaging for appropriate application rates.

Irrigation And Watering

During winter, LM instant lawn’s water requirements change. Reduce watering frequency while ensuring the grass receives sufficient moisture. Water deeply but less frequently to encourage deep root growth. Avoid overwatering, as excess moisture can lead to fungal diseases. Monitor weather conditions and adjust your watering schedule accordingly.

Control Weeds

Prevent the growth of weeds in your LM instant lawn by applying a pre-emergent herbicide in the late fall or early winter. This will help suppress weed germination, minimising competition with the grass. Spot-treat any existing weeds using a selective herbicide suitable for your lawn type. Follow the instructions carefully to avoid damage to the LM instant lawn.

Protect From Foot Traffic

To maintain the integrity of your LM instant lawn during winter, minimise foot traffic as much as possible. Constantly walking or playing on frozen or dormant grass can cause damage, resulting in bare patches and weak growth once spring arrives. Create designated pathways or stepping stones to guide foot traffic and protect the lawn.

Contact Evergreen Turf For Details

Proper winter care is vital to maintain the health and aesthetics of your LM instant lawn. Implementing these winter care practices set the stage for a beautiful and thriving LM instant lawn come spring. So, contact us today to order your LM instant lawn for a lovely yard.
